It’s been a about 6 years since the release of Pauline Croze’s first and self-titled album in 2005 and it’s still one of my favorites and in high rotation on my MP3 player. I first heard Croze during a shift while working in a woman’s clothing boutique. The owner brought the CD back from a trip to Paris and after a few rotations Croze quickly became a shop favorite that we kept on repeat. What struck me was the soul and quality of her voice over an acoustic guitar and the range of styles and moods her album expressed.
A French Fiona Apple, I remember thinking while listening through a collection of what could be described as melancholy, romantic and poetic pop and modern French folk. Even with my limited French, the album’s song “Quand Je Suis Ivre”, evoked empathy for someone experiencing love and a broken heart. An upbeat and punchy “Femme Fossile” made me dance behind the cash register and to the dismay of some of my customers; “Tita” encouraged me to hit some of Croze’s semi high notes.
For me it was a solid and an impressive debut that solidified me as a fan to the album. I have also enjoyed watching Croze’s growth as an artist. Croze’s sophomore follow up, Un Bruit Qui Court was released in 2008.
