Hotel Mama Shelter

Who says cheap can’t be chic?  Fresh and modern, Mama Shelter is the perfect hotel for the budget-conscious who don’t want to skimp on style.

Opened in 2008, the former garage was transformed into 170 rooms of sleek, minimalistic design candy thanks to Philippe Starck, one of France’s leading urban furniture and interior designers.  Rooms feature five star bedding, microwave oven, minibar, 24 inch iMAC (TV, radio, cd/dvd and Internet capable) free wifi, free on demand movies and lastly, a sweet nod to those who appreciate the “nerd-cool” factor:  superhero and Star Wars character masks re-purposed as charming bedside lanterns.

For action you won’t need to travel far;  downstairs you’ll find Mama Shelter’s bar, complete with foosball table and an amusing feature for the social media generation: interactive flat screen monitors mounted throughout the space that allow patrons to upload live photos and messages.  Tweeting for the digitally brazen, on a smaller, more intimate scale.

If that doesn’t keep you entertained, then stick around; on Thursday, Friday and Saturday the hotel restaurant doubles as a musical venue and plays host to a myriad of artists and djs from around the globe.  Hungry?  Mama’s got you covered with traditional French cuisine and delicious brasserie-style dishes that you can enjoy indoors or on the outdoor terrace.  Simpler fare your style?  Mama Pizzeria serves up individual sized pizzas from noon to 1:30 am.

With awards under it’s belt such as “Most Stylish Business Hotel” (WallPaper, 2009), “Best Design Hotel” (Travel and Leisure, 2009) and “Best 100 Hotels in Europe” (Geo Saison, 2010) it is amazing that Mama Shelter manages to maintain a laid back,  casual atmosphere where everyone feels at home.  The hotel’s website describes the ambiance perfectly:

“Mama, your mama, our mama, everyone’s mama.  This is your shelter, our shelter.  A shelter for everyone.”

The most basic of rooms start at 79 Euro a night.  Good deal, non?
